What does an Art Therapy session look like?
Many people ask me this question, so I thought I will write a description of what to expect when you come to an Art Therapy session at my practice.
We begin by talking about the meaning of art therapy, especially pointing out that art therapy is not about creating beautiful pictures, but that it’s about tuning into yourself and expressing yourself in a creative way. There is no right or wrong, no judgment, and whatever a client creates in the studio is fine. I emphasise to the client, that the therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and that the type of therapy has to suit the person.
As an overview of the structure of a session, I begin by greeting the client and check in how the client is going, if there is any issue they would like to explore, and then we continue with a short meditation. I think it is helpful to relax and just to get in touch with yourself before the art making. Most clients are happy to give it a go.
After the meditation, we move on to the table where the client can find several different art materials. I work using a non-directive method, so people are free to use whatever art materials they like during the session. I don’t introduce too many art materials, as that can overwhelm people who are not used to doing a lot of art. I then support the client to reflect on how they are feeling with drawing, painting or with a three-dimensional material, such as clay.
Once the client says that they have finished their art making, I would see if they're comfortable to reflect on what they have created, and then we would have time for a chat. Together we will explore perceptions, emotional experiences, clarifying what is important to the client, look at coping strategies and desired outcomes.
In the session we would not try and change unwanted thoughts and feelings but instead I encourage clients to develop a new and compassionate relationship with their thoughts and experiences.
If you need support to make positive changes, or even if you just need support in identifying setting an intention, I will be more than happy to assist you in your unique journey. If you have any more questions or would like to have a chat about how I work, please feel free to call or email me.
